Vladimir Kantor's Lecture "Imperial Liberalism, or the Truth of Mihkail Katkov vs Russian Society"

Event ended

On March 29 in F.M.Dostoevsky Museum Professor Vladimir Kantor will deliver the lecture "Imperial Liberalism, or the Truth of Mikhail Katkov vs Russian Society" within the framework of the project "University, Opened to the City: Tuesday Lectures in Moscow Museums".

In the nineteenth century Russian liberalism was closely connected with the state as a result of those European freedoms given by reign. According to Pushkin, the governmaent was the only European in Russia.

Mikhail Katkov is one of the brightest thinkers and figures of the liberal circle. Having begun with Belinsky, survived in the famous seven-year period of repression, with the beginning of the reign of Alexander II Katkov returned to literature, published the most famous journal of those years, "Russkiy Vestnik", in which the best Russian writers were printed, promoted classical gymnasiums to create a layer of truly European Russian people. But from enlightened liberalism, he - for the protection of liberalism - passed to active protection of the empire. This will constitute the subject of the lecture. Russian society, as often happened, failed to appreciate his efforts.
