Dissertation by I. I. Pavlov The Influence of Secular and Anti-Secular Dimensions of the 'New Religious Consciousness' on the Formation of N. A. Berdyaev Metaphysics was written under the guidance of Alexander V. Mikhailovsky, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities at the National Research University "Higher School of Economics".
The dissertation addressed the problem of applicability of the methodology of intellectual history and theories of secularization to the study of the history of Russian religious thought. It was shown that it is the use of this kind of research framework that is the most productive for the academic explanation of the phenomenon of Russian religious philosophy. Also in the dissertation, a reconstruction of the philosophical evolution of Berdyaev was carried out during the period when he developed his metaphysical concept as a version of the “new religious consciousness”; this evolution was considered in the context of the philosopher's relationship with Merezhkovsky's circle, as well as his polemics with Merezhkovsky and Rozanov. The purpose of this study is to reveal the influence of secular and anti-secular aspects of the "new religious consciousness" on the formation of Berdyaev's metaphysics.
